Old Well Found at the Latta House
On April 2, 2005 the old Latta House well was discovered by Bill "Shep" Shepard while doing some spring landscaping. "There has always been a depression in this part of the yard," Shep says. "I decided to dig down to see if I could determine why this particular spot was sinking." After some digging the ground caved in to reveal an old, beautifully hand stacked rock walled well. "The discovery of the well is a significant find." Shep says. "It not only compliments the history of the Latta House, it is one more reason for this house and this land to become a community cultural center and archive."
The well will also serve as a point of reference in the historical photos. Below with some enhancement we can see a woman standing at the well getting water. A reconstruction of the well will be under way this summer. |
